Long-Drive
Toolkit
Eight hours to the south — and back again. How to arrive without the back pain.
Targets
Lumbar spine, hip position, shoulder load.
How to Do It
- Hips level with or slightly above your knees.
- Backrest slightly reclined, around 100–110° — not bolt upright.
- Sit close enough that your elbows stay bent and your back stays against the seat when you steer.
- Use the lumbar support, or a rolled towel in the small of your back.
- Empty your back pockets — sitting on a wallet tilts the pelvis for the whole drive.
Duration
2 minutes, before the engine starts
Targets
Neck — and whiplash protection in a rear-end shunt.
How to Do It
- Raise it so the middle of the headrest meets the back of your head, not your neck.
- Bring it as close to your head as the adjustment allows.
- Check it again if someone else has driven the car.
Duration
30 seconds — most people have never adjusted theirs
Targets
Hip flexors, lumbar spine, circulation.
How to Do It
- Stop every 90 minutes to 2 hours. Get out — a fuel stop in the seat doesn't count.
- Walk for five minutes.
- Stand tall and arch gently backwards a few times.
- Stretch one hip flexor at a time, 30 seconds each side.
- Keep drinking water; it forces the stops you need anyway.
Duration
5 minutes per stop
Targets
Discs and the muscles that protect them, straight out of hours of sitting.
How to Do It
- Walk around for two to three minutes before touching the luggage.
- Slide heavy bags to the edge of the boot before lifting.
- Get the case close to your body, then lift.
- Turn with your feet — never twist through a loaded back.
Duration
3 minutes — the single most useful item here
Targets
Hip flexors and the whole spine, after sustained flexion.
How to Do It
- Cat-cow, 8 slow cycles.
- Standing hip-flexor stretch, 30 seconds each side.
- Thoracic extension over a rolled towel, 60 seconds.
- Repeat the next morning — day two is usually the stiffest.
Duration
5 minutes, evening and next morning
Back not right since the drive? Most post-journey pain settles in 1–2 sessions if seen early.
